Wish For A White Christmas SIGNAL NEWS Hope For A Happy 1955 Thursday, December 16, 1954 St. Mary's City, Maryland Vol. 7—No. 3 Christmas Bazaar Enjoyed By All Christmas Comes To St. Mary's With Festival, Prom, Assembly, And Banquet Faculty Quartette Sings The Christmas Bazaar was successfully staged by the Senior and Sophomore Classes on Friday night, December 3. This year there were in attendance many children of the faculty, and dates also added greatly to the fun. The theme of the bazaar was “An Arabian Market.” The booths were in tents made of sheets and crepe paper and perhaps the most unusual was the one in the center of the smoker suspended from the ceiling with crepe paper streamers hanging from all sides. The Sophomores served delicious hot turkey sandwiches, pie a la mode, and chocolate and maple nut sundaes. The Seniors decided to extend their usual sale of S.M.S. T-shirts, colts, and pins by offering sweatshirt jackets, T-shirts, stuffed dogs, and pennants. New merchandise such as Puerto Rican costume jewelry and party aprons sold as well as the traditional address books. The two most popular spots in the smoker on the night of the bazaar were the corners featuring Beverly Harris and Ruth DeLaw-der doing pencil sketches, and Miss Sandner telling very delightful fortunes. For the person wishing something to do, there was a cake walk, dart throwing, and dancing; and for the one who likes to exercise the brain there were baby picture, quotation, and stone guessing contests won by Carol Thompson, Mr. Whitman, and Miss Rotha, respectively. (Continued on Page 4) Festival Hastens Yule Once again Christmas has arrived at St. Mary’s; and to celebrate its arrival, the traditional Carol Festival was held Sunday, December 12, at 8:00 p.m. Each year a person from the senior class who is an all-around girl, who has served the college, who has set an honorable example for the rest of the college, and who most typifies the Christmas ideal is chosen by Miss Russell to portray the “ Spirit of Christmas.” This year’s “Spirit of Christmas” was Nancy Long, who gave an appropriate speech and started the traditional lighting of the candles. Choirs from c o m m u n i t y churches and schools presented special music for the candlelight festival. Those participating were Margaret Brent High School, Hollywood Methodist Church Girls’ Choir, and St. Mary’s Junior College. A solo was given by Mildred Hickson, who sang Ava Maria. An additional feature of this year’s carol festival was a tableaux of the manger scene, presented by five students under the direction of Mr. Whitman. Christmas presents which had been bought for needy families were put under the huge, brilliantly decorated Christmas tree. Community singing of familiar carols was led by Miss Henninger as a very inspiring evening came to an end. Prom Entertains Many On December 12, the evening was highlighted with a Christmas Prom sponsored by the Athletic Association. With the music of the Naval Base band the evening got off to a good start. The gym was attractively decorated to portray the theme of Blue Christmas. The well trimmed Christmas tree, snowy-white angels, clouds, and numerous glistening snowflakes made the atmosphere far from blue. Everyone joined in with the merriment to help make the evening a big success. After the dance, the girls and their dates gathered in the Smoker for a social hour. As the last strains of I'll Have a Blue Christmas Without You faded into the night, the girls were saying goodnight to their dates and an evening well spent. Banquet Instills Joy Everyone always looks forward to our annual Christmas Banquet, and this year proved to be just as joyous as previously. Can’t you still smell that “ turkey aroma” floating up from the kitchen? One of the highlights o f the Banquet was Santa, who bestowed gifts on all those who had been good this year (Even if it was only a rubber mouse from the five and ten!) He was thoughtful enough to bring Mrs. Posch a sleigh so she can stop fearing that “Southern Maryland” snow. Each class presented a skit pertaining to Christmas, either serious or comical. Then to add to the merriment, carols were sung. The decorations consisted of holly, pine, pine cones, and red bulbs, with the Christmas tree in the background. To add a touch of Christmas the girls were dressed in pastel evening gowns. And those cute Santa Claus place cards were noteworthy. Visit From Santa The annual Student Government Christmas Assembly was presented on Wednesday, December 8, with Margaret Slingluff presiding as hostess. Santa Claus, a yearly visitor to the Student Government assembly, was genially acted by Faye Seifert, in beard, red suit, and appropriate pillow stuffing. Council members dressed as little girls and sat on Santa’s knee to give their requests for Christmas. Miss Simms, on behalf of the faculty, asked Santa for “men for all the old maids.” An early gift for the entire student body was a new smoker in the main building. Margaret Slingluff then read a Christmas story, “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry, and the assembly closed with the singing of Christmas carols. "Teacups" A Big Success The second offering of Samad-ra this season was “Over the Teacups,” which was presented on Friday, December 10, at 8:30 P.M. in the gym smoker. Written by Percival Wilde, “Over the Teacups” is a gay comedy. It concerns two old ladies, impoverished by the Depression, who live together and alter- (Continued on Page 4) Faculty Spanked By Juniors 31-14 Simms And Chance Cheer “Did someone say there was going to be a volleyball game, or a slaughter on St. Mary’s Boulevard?” To be exact, it was both, as the junior intramural team beat the faculty team to the tune of 31-14. The gym was crowded with enthusiastic rooters as the game got off to an exciting start. The large crowd helped to produce excitement among the teams, as they all cheered their squadron. The faculty tried to score some points but they were unable to overcome the juniors’ early lead. Mr. Whitman spiked many a ball, but it seemed that Henry would out-do him every time. It must have been Mr. Yarborough’s back row coaching that helped the faculty along, because he surely was rooting for his team. Aside from the fact that Miss Russell sent many a low flying ball back to the juniors when and where they least expected it, the juniors took the game with “ the greatest of ease.” Even though the faculty didn’t shine in scores, they certainly did when it came to “ cheerleaders.” Their sailor girls, Simms and Chance, are to be congratulated on their job well done. This ended an enthusiastic and well supported volleyball season. The final game has been classed as a “ gooder” and we are looking forward to more. The students really played their hearts out during all the games. We congrat the faculty on their “ entertaining” game and wish them better luck next time. Remember that with the basketball season at hand “ the teams need you and your school spirit.” This means you!
