The Adventurous Eve ‘Twas the night before Christmas And all through the house Not a creature was stirring Except me — a brown mouse The stockings were hung By the chimney with care For one to go snooping through If I dare! . The glow of the lights Beaming throughout the tree Thrust warm rays like sunshine But I barely could see. My children were nestled All snug in the straw While I was in this house Getting “presents” for all. I scampered and scurried To find something good But most things were too big Oh, I’d take them if I could. I tested the cookies Reserved for St. Nick. There was also some cake I disposed of quite quick. Throughout the room I found Fruits, nuts, and candy. If I could find sharp cheese, Everything would be dandy. Up to the mantel I managed to climb. Nothing but greens and candles Could I find. I was just about ready To give up the search When the tinkly of sleigh bells Set me off with a lurch. I ran and I jumped Up over a chair, And rushed into a cat Who was sleeping there. I thought to myself As I stared at his face I better get ready For this cat and mouse chase! But his drowsy eyes opened While slowly he said, “Don’t you know Santa’s coming? Get back to bed!” Sandy Barnes All is Calm, All is Bright Oh yes! The days before Christmas are a joyous sight— The multitudes of angry, last-minute shoppers pushing through crowded department stores, The obnoxious voice of Bing Crosby crooning, “All is calm; All is bright.” As if anyone there could conceive of serenity As they buy little plastic Christ Childs to put under their Christmas trees. And on the fifth floor (Toy department) is to be found the Lord God of Hosts—Santa Claus. He has been sitting in his hallowed place Since before Thanksgiving and He’s tired of saying, “Ho, ho, ho!” fifteen million times a day to his little worshippers. And the egg nog flows, And many make their ways to the parties, And a few make their ways to the churches. They know that God is ever watchful— But is he? And if he is, Does he like what he sees? I wonder. Pat Parker Message of Christmas Out of the night a child was born Who would live and be loved and suffer much scorn. “Peace on Earth,” the angels did sing, When to the world came this glorious King. Wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger, The child was ready to greet every stranger. Shepherds frightened by a bright star, Came to see Him from afar. They knelt before Him and praised His name; The animals about them did the same. Wise men knelt eluded by myths And presented Him with precious gifts. Born of the Virgin Mary, All the sins of the world He would carry. Good will toward men was His goal in life That men should live and suffer no strife. Today in the world this goal still stands, That peace and good will reign through the lands. And so when you hear Christmas bells ringing, Let the joy in your heart begin singing. Then the love in your heart will glow Through the thoughtfulness you show. Remember the infant so small Who was born to redeem us all. Peggy Burdette
