MARY'S CITY, MARYLAND Vol. 5 -----No. 6 G r a d u a t e s R e c e i v e D e g r e e s T o d a y Local Garden Club Gives Lecture-Demonstration On Flower Arranging Two members of Ikebana International presented a lecture-demonstration of Oriental flower arrangement on Monday, May 18, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s Hall, under the auspices of the Town Creek Garden Club. Mrs. Kenneth Davis, vice president of Ikebana International, has studied oriental flower arranging for 20 years. Born in California, she has lived most of her life in China and Japan. She lectured on five of more than 20 schools of oriental arrangement. Mrs. Marvin Neese, who holds a Masters Degree in the O’Hara School, has studied in the orient for 5 years, while stationed there with .her husband. A one-time resident of St. Mary’s County, she is editor of Ikebana International Magazine. Top award winners at graduation are (top row, left to right) Susan Faumtlerroy, Good Citizenship award; Mrs- Regina Hammett). President Bids Farewell My congratulations to all of you who are members of this first graduating class of St. Mary’s College of Maryland. In saying farewell to you, I want to express for the administrative staff and faculty our appreciation of the fine record you have established in your two years at St. Mary’s. We are glad that this class of 1964 has received the first diplomas bearing our new name. It associates you in a special way with the progress and development of our college. You have played a vital part in the realization of many of these changes. It is our wish that this college has enabled you to set standards of excellence for yoursfelv°s in the years ahead. We are confident that we will take pride in your achievements and contributions in the communities in which you will reside. Thank you for being the quality of persons you are and may you always go with God. May Russell, President T o p A w a r d s Commencement exercises awarding A. A. degrees to the Class of 1964 were held Sunday, June 7, at 2 p.m. During the Graduation ceremony, coveted awards were presented to both freshman and sophomore students for their achievements in scholarship and leadership at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Receiving the First Honor Graduate award was Mrs. Regina Hammett, who plans to teach next year at St. John’s. Kathleen McKenna received the Best All-around Woman Student award, and John Slade received the Best All-around Male Student award. Both Miss McKenna and Mr. Slade have participated actively in various organizations at St. Mary’s for the past two years- Awarded the Good Citizenship medals were Susan Fauntleroy and William Patrick. The award for outstanding character and influence for good was presented to Kathryn Bishop. Other awards went to Debbie Scarff for achievement in science; to Marie Morgan as the most promising student of aft; to Janet Buchanan for achievement in music. For the most outstanding work in art, John Fletcher received a $25 Purchase Award. The award to the outstanding student in the Department of Business went to Agnes Ruth Garner; and the award for outstanding achievement in Home Economics went to Alice Grace Stambaugh. Robert W. Norris was .honored as the most outstanding player of the men’s varsity basketball team. REMINDER Sophomores Registration on September 15, 1964 School To Honor 1914, 1939 Alumni S ix Alumni from the classes of 1914 and 1939 will be honored at St. Mary’s College of Maryland Homecoming on June 13-14 this year. Hostesses from the different alumni chapters will greet returning alumni at a social hour in the Calvert Hall sitting rooms during registration on Saturday from 11:30 - 12:30, preceding the luncheon and business meeting. A new feature this year will be a Hootenanny on Saturday evening at 8 p.m. Led by Bob Schwier of the class of ’65, old friends and new will gather to sing songs in the Kent Hall recreation room. On Sunday boat rides, swimming ,and recreation will be followed by a picnic luncheon in the Garden of Rememberance. Highlighting this year’s homecoming will be the dedication of the new boat .house k> the college by past alumni president, Mildred Sped-den McDorman of the class of 1914. S tu d e n ts R e c e i v e
