Thursday Dec. 75 B o y e r G i v e s M e s s a g e To the Students of St. Mary’ : C ollege: As each of you jt'epare to enjoy the ensuing holiday season and make final preparations to return to your homes and be with your families, we want you to know that all of us at St. Mary’ s College wish for you the most blessed Christmas and the most prosperous of New Years. George F. Boyer Dean of Faculty Candlelight Service Held One of the most impressive events that is held on campus is the Christmas Candlelight Service. At this time the entire student body and faculty gather to give thanks and praise the birth of a King. At one time the service was held in Trinity Episcopal Church, but due to the increase in the student body, it has been moved to St. Mary’ s Hall. This year the Candlelight Service was held on Tuesday, December 13, at 8:15. As you entered St. Mary’ s Hall, the feeling of reverence and grace could be seen and felt by all. Mr. B. Elwood Fahl, faculty representative, gave an opening prayer after which the choir of St. Mary’ s College under the direction of Brantley D. Greeson and accompanied by Mrs. Shirley Echard presented the annual program. Some of the songs which came from the “ Ceremony of Carols” by Benjamin Britten were “ There is No Rose” , “ As Dew in Aprille” , and “ This Little Babe” . As is the annual event, the Spirit of Christmas, chosen by the faculty and girls, is presented. This year Kathy Heron was chosen to represent the Spirit of Christmas. She made a short address and as is the custom, lighted the candle of Mr. Greeson and the candle of each person at the end of each row of seats. They, in turn, lighted their neighbor’ s candle. As the choir filed out followed by the audience, all were singing the carol “ Silent Night” . Mr. Fahl closed the program with a short prayer as the people stood on the steps of St. Mary’ s Hall. Many left the service still holding their glowing candles bringing peace and l ight into a dark world. H um a n i t i e s P ro g r am O f f e r e d “ Join the underground; you have nothing to lose but your sleep.” It is a universally acknowledged fact that the educational process reaches its lowest point in the college classroom. In an effort to reverse this situation, the students and faculty of St. Mary’ s College have organized a new humanities program to begin next semester. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Henley and Miss Swearingen, the course will be open to sophomores on a volunteer basis, and will offer no credit value. Based on a seminar form, and involving a small number of students in each group, the program will attempt to bring about an understanding of the literary, philosophical and historical approach to the nature of the rebel in society. All class discussion will center around a list of required reading to be studied by the individual student independent of class time. For more information on this unique course of study, or for a preview of the reading material to be covered, interested sophomores should contact Mr. Henley or a member of his planning committee. TEACHERS PRESENT CHRISTMAS LIST Dear Santa, We teachers of St. Mary’ s have comprised our own gift list. Would you please do the best you can to grant our wishes!
