Page 4 THE POINT NEWS January 24,1969 The Point News Staff would like to thank Mr. Merovick for his guidance, cooperation, and above all PATIENCE in presenting this edition. Pro DeBow SMC 64 vs BCC 59 SMC achieved its first victory of the season on December 13 by defeating Baltimore College ofCom-merce 64 to 59. The game was played at Parkville Armory, on a floor covered with some kind of sand. At times it looked like the players were doing a strange version of the “ old soft shoe.*’ We broke on top from the start, and were never behind. A sticky zone press by BCC made the game close in the second half. But a dutch lay-up by co-captain Jay Lowery broke the tie and St. Mary's achieved its first (and at this point only) victory of the season. Jay Lowery came up with an outstanding effort of 20 points and 21 rebounds, to lead the victors. SMC 86 vs WILLIAMSPORT 110 The Saints had their best game offensively against Williamsport when they scored 86 points. But this means nothing, when your defense allows 110. Williamsport was led by its outstanding guard, Adams. He continually streaked down court and scored easy layups time and again. St. Mary’ s could not adjust to the running game of the visitors, and we continually fell behind by huge margins. Adams, of Williamsport, led all scorers with 31 points, at least 16 of which were “ snowbird layups." Jay Lowery was high scorer of St. Mary’ s with 25 points, Skip Smith had 18 for the Saints. St. Mary’ s had its best day ever offensively, shooting a sizzling 53.5% from the floor. SMC 45 vs GETTYSBURG 123 123-45 sounds more like a zip code than a basketball score. But that was the score when SMC was humilated by Gettysburg on the winner’ s floor. This game is better off forgotten, but to give you an idea of how terrible we were, here are some vital statistics: 43 turnovers, 15-19 at the half, we took only 47 shots the entire game, Gettysburg had 8 men in double figures. Mr. Ed Cole summed up the first half nicely when he said “ That's the worst half of basketball I ’ ve ever seen” Jay Lowery was high scorer for both teams with 20 points. SMC 56 vs HARFORD JR. 96 Led by the leading scorer in the tri-state conference, Steve Rad-diffee, Hartford Jr. College defeated St. Mary’ s by the score of 96-56. Harford nad tne game in control from beginning to end. Harford had a big size advantage over us, and the sickness of co-captain Jay Lowery hurt our board strength considerably. Turn-overs were again the big reason why we lost, if you give the ball to the other team 24 times they are bound to score on at least 10 of these gifts. It has been said that SMC needs a bonified big man, but the real need is that of a good ball handler, someone to provide leadership and settle the team down when things are tense. Steve Raddiffee led all scorers with 30 points. SMC 73 vs CHEASAPEAKE CC 76 Of all the other losses we have had this year, the loss to Chesapeake was the most difficult to swallow. We had Chesapeake by 16 points mid-way through the second half, and simply blew it. Again the lack of a proficient ball handler hurt us. Ten points up with 7 and one half minutes left we took the ball down and threw up careless shots time after time. This failure to work the ball in for a good shot ultimately cost us the ball game. We let them play their game, instead of the other way around. The loss of Jay Lowery hurt us considerably, for the second game in a row. I f we had had Mr. Lowery, I have to say that we would have smoked them out in a hurry. This game was a heart breaker to lose and a beautiful thing to win. Brice for Chesapeake led all scorers with 21 points. SMC 72 vs STRAYER Jr. 91 SMC played their finest game of the year against arch rival Stray-er J.C., but still came out on the short end of a 91-72 score. Stray-er ’ s outstanding guard, Preston Gale, killed us continually on drives in the lane and on fast breaks. They ran a lot early, and consequently they were very tired by half time. The Saints capitalized on their condition and cut the lead from 20 to 7 at the half period. Strayer’ s was not to be denied in the second half though; a drive by Preston Gale, and a base line jumper put them 11 points up. This forced us to play catch-up ball, and we simply couldn’t come through in the clutch. Joe McCaddin had an outstanding game for St. Mary’ s,he had 21 points and didn’ t even start. Preston Gale led all scorers with 26 points. Letter To The Sports Fans Men’s Intramurals The MAA volleyball games ended with the come behind Panthers headed by Mr. Louie P. Stone being defeated by the awesome Roadrunners led by Michael As-plen. The games were played with much enthusiam and participation by all teams. MAA Basketball L:ames have already state.). 3o tai Llie Orangemen are leading the tournament with the Bees in pursuit. There hasn’ t been as much participation but games have been interesting. The Basketball intramurals should end this Wednesday. This years basketball team has started at an unusual low. Not many things have happened to disprove this theory or that anything will happen to help it. But there Is something that can be done to help our team in the future — support. With support our varsity could be more “ psyched-up” and play a better game. With each progressing game, the team has played together more and achieved what the fans want to see, a good basketball game and a possible win. Discouraging or downing the team is no way to get the needed spirit which is essential for a winning team. As has been stated, our team Is starting to look more and more like a small college basketball team. We couldn’ t play LaSalle, but in time could hold our own. It takes time for a team to play together. The varsity started practicing a few weeks after they arrived here at St. Mary’ s. This is hardly time enough to get together a good high school team much less college. Most good high school teams have players who have played together for years. Our team has but a few first string players with any experience at playing together, and their positions have to be changed from time to time to add versatility* What the team needs is experience, and time, a combination that is interchangeable. Support the team, be patient and there will be better results the second semester. Go to the games and raise hell, something that will give the players the* impression that the school cares, Allen Hicks The Rah-Rah’s Have Done It Again With two games left to play, the W.A.A. intramural basketball tournament is almost over. The Rah-Rah’ s claimed first place with an 11-1 record. The Redskins took second place with a 9-1/2- 2 record. The G.B.’ s came in third with a 3-1/2-6 record and the Dum-Dum’ s and Ha-Ha’ s are tied for last with a 2-9 record. The top scorers for each team were: Rah-Rah’ s - Barbara zaiser - 85 pts. Redskin’ s - Patti Sharpnack - 63 pts. Ha-Ha's - Debbie Schuhart - 28 pts. Dum-Dum’s - Sharon Faraday - 21 pts. G.B.’ s - Barbara Schumann - 17 pts. The two top scorers for all the teams were: Barbara Zaiser - 85 pts. Patti Sharpnack - 63 pts. With the Basketball Tournament drawing to a close, attention is now being turned towards the tryouts for Women’s Varsity Basketball. The tournament showed that St. Mary’ s has both the girls and the ability for a varsity team. The only factor that is lacking is the support. With this factor added to the rest, SMC can have a great women's varsity team.
