T en n is T eam M akes History O n g a u a o n This is the first varsity athletic team to go the entire season undefeated. The tennis team compiled a record of 7 straight wins, with one match remaining to be played. This is the first year in the M.I.C. conference, which is made up of smaller colleges in Maryland, such as our own. Statistics show that the team compiled 51 wins against 12 losses out of a total of 63 individual matches. Out of this came 35 wins and 7 losses in singles and 16 wins and 5 losses in doubles. The team scores were: SMC vs. George Mason College (A) 5-4 SMC vs. Bowie State College (A) 9-0 SMC vs. Charlotte Hall (A) 7-2 SMC vs. George Mason College (H) won by forfeit SMC vs. D.C. Teacher's College (H) 6-3 SMC vs. D.C. Teacher’s College (A) 6-3 SMC vs. Charlotte Hall (H) 9-0 Along with the team being undefeated, there were four players who were also undefeated in 'singles. Jeff Pitts and Clinton George, the team’s number 2 and 3 players each went the season with a 7 and 0 record. The number 6 man, Donnie Anthony, who advanced to number 5, after Bill Fluharty broke his leg in an intramural softball game, finished with a 6 and 0 slate. Russ Diffenderfer, late-comer to the team and number 6 player, compiled a 3 and 0 record. Bill Malone, the number 1 player and team captain, completed the season with a 5 and 2 record losing only to the number 1 player in the conference. John Rue, Bill Fluharty, and Paul Hawkins rounded out the eight man team and contributed to the squads’ winning record. Coach Jack Lowder feels that this has been one of the best teams in St. Mary’s tennis history and that it shows great potential for next year’s season. From the eight players, six will be returning next year. With this many of the players returning, there are great hopes of winning the conference championship next year. At this time the team would like to express its thanks for those people who came out to the home matches and rallied the players on to victory. To Mr. Jack Lowder we extend our deepest gratitude for helping us throughout this “history-making” season. Congratulations to him and the undefeated team of SMC. B o y Varsity Sports Draw Interest by A1 Hicks Girls Intramurals The tennis intramural swill start on Monday the 26th of May. They will last about \ >ir days. Rah Rahs Win Again The Rah Rahs — Sue Brooker, Diane LeGoullon, Gayle Schaefer, Nancy Carr, Bev Finnegan, Leigh Hartlove, Diana Waldron, Pam Nides, and Shef, recently won the W.A.A. softball championship. Team number four (Hah Hahs) were defeated by the score of fourteen to eight in a five inning game. Congratulations again Rah Rahs!” This year the students of St. Mary’s College showed a better interest in the Varsity sports as well as the Intramural sports. The spirit was not unusually high, buA interest did make a major ir iert to the different sports. This year rowing was added as another sport. Interest has been stimulated into different varieties of sports. This interest is what has been lacking at St. Mary’s for years. St. Mary’s is expanding in academics, facilities, and now in athletics. With the expansion there should be a better variety of sports in which next years student can choose and excel in. With this coming interest, a desire 'for a varsity baseball team has been mentioned, a varsity swimming team and a expanded program for the rowing team have been initiated and hopefully will come about. As Sports Editor I would like to thank the interested athletic minded people for their ideas and actions in the development of an expanded sports program. I would also like to thank the interested students for their support through out the year in the different sports, without your interest, the players ,/ould not be able to play an effective game.
