EMPATH, FEBRUARY27.1978 PageS Saints have Winning Season by Terry Shawn (Terry Shawn is a former SMC student and was the Sports Information Director fo r the college 1976-77. Presently he is executive secretary o f the Saints Booster Club. —Ed.) The St. Mary’s College Saints played their last home game Tuesday, February, 21, against Salisbury State College. It was a disappointing climax to the home season appearances of the team and their graduating senior players as the Sea Gulls beat the Saints 98-79. High scorers for SMC were Herb Mahone, who fired up a number of high-arching outside shots, and along with James “ Fleet” Sherrod’s consistent play they finished with 18 points each. From the start the game was not the tempo that the Saints wanted, as the Sea Gulls pulled to a good lead early. The Saints were still down 39-46 at half and came within only a few points until Salisbury proceeded to go all out for the century mark in the game’s last seconds. This leaves the 12-9 Saints with two games to play, one at Bowie State on February 22 and the other at Stockton State in New Jersey. The Saints had just come off what Coach Bryan said was “ the most disappointing loss I have experienced this season,” as the Saints bowed to the University of the District of Columbia 88-93 in overtime. In the losing effort “ Fleet” Sherrod had 22 points and 18 rebounds. Of the last 11 contests, the Saints have won 8, the first of which was against Shenandoah College, who at the time boasted an 8-1 record and were ranked number two in Virginia’s small college division. Behind Tom Maleski’s 16 points the Saints won 86-69. Fromithere SMC beat Mary Washington College with 14 points from Michael Ayers and an outstanding performance from Sherrod with 19 rebounds. “ Fleet” continued his winning ways as he contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds to boost the Saints to a 94-86 victory over Gallaudet. In a disappointing loss to University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Herb Mahone scored 24 points with Tom Maleski’s 12 points. With the help of a very offensively potent performance from UMES’ “Chic” Simmons whose 52 points set a UMES school record, they beat the Saints 101-109. The next night however, the Saints returned to their winning ways as they beat Bowie State 86-77. “ Fleet Sherrod, with another outstanding performance, ended with 22 points and 15 rebounds. The Saints and Sherrod continued to rally over Mary Washington College 103-66 with 19 points and 10 rebounds to “ Fleet’s” credit. Tom Brown was the man with the clutch jumper with 2 seconds on the clock to finish off Salisbury State 74-72. Sherrod had 18 points and 12 rebounds, for Saints high-scorer. Two days later Tom Maleski’s 11 rebounds and Sherrod’s 21 points proved 1| Photo by Mary Tydings fatal once again for Shenandoah College. The final score, 98-72. Misdirection off-the-court could have proven costly for the Saints as they traveled to Anacostia High School to play Southeastern University. While Coach Bryan arrived with a depleted squad two players were still trying to find the place. With the help of Tom Brown’s 18 points and Tom Maleski’s 11 rebounds the Saints won 64-59. Coach Bryan has been pleased with the performance of two freshman guards, Michael Ayers and Bobby Hill. As of this writing Ayers has 47 assists. 227 points, and 57 rebounds. Hill has 35 assists, 153 points and 17 rebounds. Transfer players Hammond Willis and Kevin Brightful have also contributed to this winning season. In 18 games Brightful has 55 points and 32 rebounds. Willis has 94 points and 56 rebounds in only 11 games. Individual one game high marks this season include Herb Mahone with the most points against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Mahone was 12 for 16 attempts. Also against UMES Tom Maleski had the most free throws with 10 for 10 attempts. “Fleet” Sherrod ended the game against the University of the District of Columbia with the most rebounds with 18. In the season thus far Herb Mahone has 18 assists, 215 points and 116 rebounds. “Fleet” Sherrod has 21 assists, 283 points and 200 rebounds. Tom Maleski has 13 assists, 250 points and 183 rebounds.
