September 19, 1990 The Point News Page 9 Elections will be held during lunch and dinner on the 19th and 20th. Of course, we, at The Point News, encourage you to vote. To help you make a responsible decision, we have allowed each of the candidates to represent themselves here in the paper. Please peruse and consider their words o' wisdom. Todd Case, Canidate for Freshman President While in high school, I was involved in several clubs and sports. I was most active in, and a founding member of, our Environmental Club. While in the club we frequently protested in front of McDonald's restaurants and gained a large amount of media attention for it. I came up with many ideas that were used for fund raisers, and I also helped to organize protests in conjunction with other schools. With the club, I was selected to go to the United Nations for a youth conference on the environment. As President, I plan to raise money, promote activities and class spirit, and listen to the needs of my fellow classmates. Experience and proven competence are important considerations in any office. It is doubly so in the selection of freshman class officers since we must make our decisions so early in the school year. Debbie Craten, Canidate for Freshman Treasurer As a candidate for Freshman class treasurer, I bring this kind of experience to the job. Throughout high school I was involved in Student government including chairing numerous class committees. I was also treasurer of the National Honor Society. I believe that I have the required skills for the office. I have two years of accounting experience, and I won my high school's Accounting Award. Please give me the chance to represent you in the coming year as your freshman class treasurer. I have the dedication and experience to get the job done right. David Heckler, Dorchester Underclass Senator Hello. My name is David Heckler and I am running for Dorchester Underclass Senator. My SGA experience includes being a member of the Crew club; and last year I was Dorchester Dorm Council Treasurer where I also served as a liaison between the dorm council and the SGA. I have three goals in mind if I become a Senator. First, constituency involvement is a farce. Article II, Section 2 of the SGA constitution states that senators shall meet with their constituents at least once a month. I don't recall that happening anywhere last year, but Dorchester was definitely one of the worst cases. Second, I would like to see a change in SGA finance policies. It boggles my mind that we can let $25,000 accumulate over the years; and at the same time all I heard at Fund Appeals was, "There isn't enough money to go around." Third, I would like to see some change in the SGA. I will not waste my, or anyone elses for that matter, with anything that, in reality, has nothing to do with St. Mary's College and/or the SGA. Dorchester Underclass Residents, YOU DO have a say in where $100,000 a year gets allocated. YOU DO have a say in activities that, whether you attend or not, affect YOU. Last, and above all, you have a right to know where SGA is, where its been, and where its going. I, David Heckler, will be your voice in the SGA. Sean Martin, Dorchester Underclass Senator In high school, I was two time representatives of the voting body to the SGA. I was also involved in various clubs and activities, such as varsity soccer, varsity baseball, Outreach, and SADD. Now at St. Mary's College, I am a volunteer with the Bright Futures Program, a Program involved with listening to and tutoring children from local middle schools. Nicole McFadden, P.G. Underclass Senator My name is Nicole McFadden and I'm running for the position of P.G. Underclass Senator. This position entails a lot of responsibility and requires me to be a liaison between Hall Council and Student Government Association (SGA). This is my second year on campus and I feel that there is a need for change. The only way to carry out any new ideas is to "get involved". With enough determination and initiative, anything can be accomplished. I know that I have a very substantial amount to give. Grant Moser, Freshman President My name is Grant Moser and I'm running for president of the class of 1994.1 want to Westminster High School and graduated in the top 5% of my class. I was involved in drama and the National Honor Society. Obviously I've worked with the SGA, chairing and volunteering for activities. I am now a freshman here at St. Mary's, in the Honors Program, with a political science major. I feel if elected, I can get the class started off on the right foot. The president should, along with his/her fellow officers promote activities that will involve everyone. If people are interested, they will become involved. Also they must be informed, by way of the newsletter and publicity signs. A basic, primary goal is to raise money to broaden our choices and privileges. There will be fundraisers such as formals, crab feasts, and outdoor activities involving the four classes. Whatever monies we raise would be utilized to raise more and budgeted for out senior year. I want this class to set precedents for other classes that follow to look up to. And I believe I could help the class do just that. Steve Smith, Freshman President Steve Smith hails from Springfield, Virginia. He's a writer and a movie and theater enthusiast. As secretary of West Springfield High school's Class of 1990, he learned how to handle finances and plan large events. "Prior experience is not all-important," he says. "All a candidate needs is the willingness to work hard and do a good job." I have these qualifications. I realize that many of us freshmen feel that they've been reduced to the number of a magnetic strip on the back of a card. Well, I realize that you're all individuals with unique ideas and problems. If you have a suggestion or complaint speak with me. As president of the freshman class, I'll be able to " give you a voice" at meetings of the student government Association. I have innovative fundraising ideas, including a boatwash and many contests. I would also try to arrange more special celebrity guests to visit SMC. If elected, we will be able to get off to an early start to make college the four incredible years they should be. Jennifer Jarrett, Freshman Vice-President I am running for freshman class vice-president. I am from New Carrollton, MD and graduated from Eleanor Roosevelt High School. My past experiences include serving as an S .G. A. representative for four years and also as senior class secretary. I plan to be an involved and active member in student government. Marcy Matos, Queen Anne Underclass Senator I would like to continue my experience with the SGA by being elected Queen Anne Underclass Senator. I was a Queen Anno Senator last year, and I will use my knowledge and experience with the system to work for Queen Anne. I was an active Senatorial member of the Policy Review Committee last year. Continued work with this committee, I believe, will eventually bring Queen Anne more parking. This is something I want to work for, as well as the safety and health of Queen Anne residents and the campus community. I have the time, and I am willing to dedicate it to working with SGA. Sarah Brannon, Queen Anne Underclass Senator I am an 18 year old freshman. I am considering a major in Political science. I am from College Park, Maryland and a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School. I was involved with student government throughout high school. I am very happy to be here at St. Mary's and am looking forward to making the most of the next four years. If elected Senator, I will do as much as I can to make St.Mary's the best it can be. I will also always listen to all ideas of the people I represent. Lynne Wood, Prince George Underclass Senator I, J. Lynne Wood, if elected Underclass Senator for the Prince George residence hall, promise to work side-by-side with both our upperclass Senator and you, the residents of Prince George, in order to give us an additional voice in the Student Government Association, besides our class officers. There are several things which I will attempt to execute if elected. The first thing I hope to achieve is dorm-wide study breaks at least once a month. Therefore, we can all become better acquaintances and will not act like total strangers in the hallways. Another thing I wish to accomplish is making recycling the number one dorm concern, as we are all the leaders of tomorrow and will need a suitable world in which to function. I am voluntary and capable of performing the required duties associated with being the P.G. Underclass Senator, including having regular meetings with my constituents. Strawberry Catubo, Queen Anne Underclass Senator In case you don't know, I'm that weird chick, Strawberry, who transferred from the University of Maryland in Naples, Italy. A lot of people don't know me very well, but I think I have enough experience for the position of Underclass Senator for the beautiful Queen Anne dorm. I was deeply involved with various high school activities. I was the vice president of the senior class, junior class rep., president of the drama club, vice-president of the French club, and Senior Class Editor of the newspaper. I was also a member of yearbook, speech/debate, Harvard model congress, and International Cultural Relations Committee. Now I'd like to contribute my abilities to the Queen Anne Underclass residents.
