Page 12 The Point News October 20,1992 Volleyball rolls over Anne Arundel, Hood College LEIGH KESSLER Staff writer Anne Arundel Community College and Hood College became the latest victims of the ladies volleyball team as they moved their way further into the season and improved their record to 10-3. When the ladies stepped onto the court to play Hood, they obviously planned to make it a quick match. The match was the best two games of three and over in less than 45 minutes. The ladies triumphed in two straight games 15-4; 15-5. The Seahawks played consistently well against Hood. Earlier in the season, the Seahawks had difficulty with playing at their full potential. Jen Tregoning led the team in kills with eight, followed closely by Stephanie Caples with six, andTracey Slade with five. Leigh Kessler dug 11 balls, Jen Tregoning and JamiePowell each added eight more. Against Anne Arundel Community College, the ladies took the court planning to avenge last season’s loss, and left victorious. The Seahawks began the first game with a 6-0 lead and, although Anne Arundel managed to catch up and make it a very close game, St. Mary’s pulled out a win 15- 12. The second game began with Anne Arundel taking an early lead and fore- Scorecard Last ^ek’s Results: Men’s soccer :. SM£ 2i,:Mar3^uht 0 • SMC3,Ga«audet0 York 3. The Seahawks handed the Yellowjackets, ranked fourth in the NCAA Division HI South Region, their firstloss of the season, and earned themselves arank of ninth in the South Region. St. Mary’s was ready to take on the undefeated Yellowjackets, and came out primed for an upset victory. Their firstgoalcamefifteen minutes into the contest when senior co-captain Katie Campbell scored off an assist from Jenny Stewart. Freshman Jenny Forbes scored the Seahawks’ final two goals, off a breakaway and off an assist from senior co-captain Virginia Leithauser. The Seahawks go on the road to face Virginia Wesleyan College on October 18, and Mary Washington College on October 21, before finishing the regular season at home on October 24, against Western Maryland. wind in their sails KRISTEN JONES staff writer Despite a lack of wind, the women’s sailing team demonstrated their top ranking talents the weekend of October 10-11. The team sent team members as far as New York, and although few got to sail, the women proved their mettle. Competing in the Freshmen Groundbreaker at the State University of New Y ork were Kevin Jewett, Ruchi Puri, Paola Hayes, John Gochberg and Mike Eaton. However due to a lack of wind the regatta never got underway. But the team was treated to good food and lodging by Gochberg’s parents and Jewett provided some late night entertainment for his hosts. Just up the river, Tim Healy and Bob Oberg went to sail at the Kings Point Laser Invite. But they too faced the same problem as the freshmen and never made it onto the water. On a better note, the women’s team sailed well at the Navy Women’s Intersectional. Team mates Bell Hughes, Kate Drew, ElizabethGravcs, Chris Dyer and Perry Reeves and Coach Adam Werblow went to this event On the water the team proved they were number one, but due to a protest they placed third overall. It looks like SMC’s women’s team will be number one this year. Come cheer them on when St. Mary’s hosts the women’s champs on the weekend of October 24-25. Once again the sailing team faced a long and challenging weekend during the weekend of October 3-4. Many of the team members were sent away to the Coast Guard Academy, the Naval Academy and Michigan State University. Sailing at CGA were Tim Healy, Karen Raley, Chad Carleton, Kari Warren, John Wobensmith and Zak MacNamara. Overall the conditions were extremely difficult with strong winds and current and the water was rough. SMC finished ninth overall. At the Naval Academy, the Seahawks sent singlehanded sailors to participate in the Area C Mono Eliminations, a MAISA qualifier. Earlier this season, Tim Healy and Bob Oberg qualified for the MAISA singlehanded championships. Sailing this time for SMC were Bill Healy, Steve Sparkman, John Gochberg and Scott Leppert. Healy placed second, qualifying for the championships. The sailing team is excited to have three singlehanded sailors sailing in the championships this year. Also that weekend, Willem Van Waay, Kristen Jones, Kevin Jewett and Kate Drew headed to the midwest to compete in the Cary Price trophy at Michigan State. Despite the thirteen hour drive and a lack of sleep the team sailed well and placed first on the water but placed third overall due to a protest Van Waay and Jones won their first race by several boat lengths and sailed consistently throughout the whole regatta despite a protest by the race committee in theirsecondrace. Jewett and Drew placed ninth in their first two races, but after the wind picked up they sailed stronger, consistently placing in the top four. They finished their last set of races with two first places.
