INDECENT PROPOS AL - Directed by Adrian Lyne * Rated “R” - Movie6odrates2TEDS out of j fear The Point News April 20,1993 Veteran Actor Gaiy Sloan to star in Macbeth at SMC Pianist Brian Ganz to perform two concertos in evening concert on April 28 PIO public information office Gary Sloan, a veteran actor of both stage and screen, will play the titlerole in the upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” at St. Mary’s College. The play opens at St. Mary’s College on Thursday, April 22, and runs April 22-25 and April 29-May 2. Performances take place at 8pm except Sundays at 2pm. A post-play discussion with the play’s director and cast will follow the Saturday, April 24 performance. Tickets canbe purchased at the door or in advance and cost $5 general admission, $3.50 for students and senior citizens. For tickets, call the college box office Garv at 301-862-0243. Sloan, a well-known actor with a huge classical repertoire, has performed in numerous Shakespearean productions, including “Richard HI,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “A Midsummer’s Night Dream.” He has also appeared in such varied productions as “The Glass Menagerie,” “K- 2,” and Sleuth” and in the day time soap operas “The Guiding Light,” “As the world turns,” and Search for Tomorrow.” “We’re blessed to have such a well-established actor,” says Michael-Ellis Tolaydo, the play’s director, “who can pass on to students what theater in the professional world is actually like.” Tolaydo, himself a veteran of the theater, has performed in and directed many productions at the Shakespeare Theater at the Folger. For this production, he has stage a very non-tradi-tional version of “Macbeth” that takes place some time in the future. Also, he has cast several of the male characters to be played by women and women and, in doing so, hopes to investigate some of the gender issues in the play. For those not familiar with the play, “Macbeth” tells the story of a highly imaginative, ambitious, and conscience- stricken nobleman whose character is revealed through his driving ambition. When the opportunity forpower is presented to him. he commits his first crime. Later, he is forced into utter degradation in order to conceal that first evil step. The play raises questions about why societies collapse and what happens when they do. Tolaydo hopes to address these issues and to explore such questions as “Is evil natural?” and “Is good created to pro-tectoneselffromevil?” But don’t expect any answers. Tolaydo promises only to raise Sioan the questions and explore them. Serving as technical director and scenic/lighting designer for the play is David W. Fura. Performing in theplay are St. Mary’s students Catheryn J. Brockett, Garrett Brown, Jenelle Brown, Walter J. J. Bartas, Anne Caston, Rae A. Edmonson III, Bill Gillett, Chris Hiliard, Kevin Hollenbeck, Mark K. Koscielniak, Rachel Lawrence, Erin E. Madden, Elizabeth Pickard, Caroline Reich, Edna Reidesel, Kerry Richards, Eric Schoen, Kevin Stanton, Bryant J. Stukes, Jill Magee Susarrey, and Steve Wannall. Also performing in the play are community members Nancy Leary, Jonathan Osborne, andDominic Vote. St. Mary’s students on the technical crew include Amy Forsberg, costume designer, Kimberly Owens, assistant stage manager, David M. Smith, sistant lighting designer; Marta Suarez, assistant stage manager, and Tamara Swanson, stage manager. PIO public information office Brian Ganz, an internationally acclaimed pianist, will neat audiences to a rare musical experience when he performs tow concertos during his final evening concert of the spring season at St. Mary’s College on Wednesday, April 28, at 8pm in Montgomery Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public. For his evening recital, Ganz will perform Rachmaninoffs “Second Piano Concerto” and Mozart’s “Piano Concerto #20 in D Minor,” K. 466. Playing with Ganz will be Brian Ganz pianist Xak Bjerken, a colleague of Ganz from the Peabody Conservatory, who will perform the piano reduction of the orchestral score for both concertos. Ganz, who serves as head of the college’s piano faculty, is the winner of several major international piano competitions. In 1989, he won the Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud international piano competition in Paris and, in 1991, he received the Silver Medal at the Queen Elizabeth of Belgium international piano competition. The program featuredAmerican Revolutionary songs, Mozart’s Divertimento in D Major, Folari’s New Work for Tibetan Instruments and Orchestra, and McKinley’s Eight Minatures for Trumpet, Basoon, and Strings. Concert seerers Brooks Scoville and Chris Heun raved, “I laughed, I cried. It was better than Cats. I’m going to see it again and again and again.”
