On Tuesday, September 14, St. Mary’s defeated Hood, an all-girl’s school Varsity team, 2:1. Goals were made by freshman wing Kerith Spicknall and senior wing Dee Watkins. In a home game six days later, the Seahawks defeated Essex Community College, another Varsity team, in a two goal shutout. Scoring for St. Mary’s were freshman inner Amy Cox and sophomore center Erin Shutes. These wins were especially important to the Seahawks because Hood and Essex were the only teams to defeat St. Mary’s last year. In addition to seven returning players, the hockey team has gained over a dozen talented and experienced newcomers. Coached voluntarily by Tammy Gage, also the Varsity women’s lacrosse coach, the Seahawks have initiated a new, more offensive lineup. The team is looking forward to seven more games, at least two of w'hich will be home. The Seahawks play Villa Julie away on Tuesday September 28. Their next home is on Saturday, October 2 at 2:00. Womens' Soccer rolls over Hopkins after loss to Notre Dame MARK KAVANAUGH sports writer The St. Mary’s women’s soccer team moved their record to an impressive 4-1 this week as they dropped one to Notre Dame of Md. and beat the squad from Johns Hopkins. The game vs. Notre Dame was played here at home on Sunday, but the home field advantage didn’t prove to be enough as the women were ousted by a hugely improved team from Notre Dame. In the first half, the scoring seemed to never end as the crafty young Garrs netted a blistering 4 goals. Only great play by the Hawks goaltender Aitoro kept the game from getting really out of hand. A rousing half time speech from head-coach Mike Sweeny got the women back on their feet for the second half, and even though they were unable to score a goal it was obvious that they were playing much better ball. The final tally was 0-5. Playing well for the seahawks were Stephanie Karpinski whose backfield play stymied many of the N.D. attacks, and Jackie Aitoro who registered upwards of 20 saves for the match. The game vs. Hopkins was one worth the drive to Baltimore as the Lady Seahawks crushed the burgeoning bluejays 3-0. The Hopkins squad was clearly outmatched, spending more time chasing the ball then touching it. The play of the Hawks was very sound with scoring coming from Jen Forbes (2) and Jacobs. The defense played an outstanding game as Aitoro notched another shut-out. Exceptionally fine play from midfielder Big Bird Vanisko and Nell Hickey rounded out the St. Mary’s attack.
