What famous teenager considered coming here, then dumped us, went to Stanford and her dad ended up staining a certain intern’s dress? 6. Whai’s the Garden of Remembrance supposed to be remembering? 7 What article of clothing do people wear on May Day? 8. What’s the theme among all of the campus buildings’ names... except Schaefer and the townhouses? 9. What’s the best newspaper on campus, whose meetings are on Mondays at 8:15? 10. Name three games at the Green Door. So you think you’re a smart-ass? Come to our meeting on Monday, Aug. 31, at 8:15 p.m.in Upper Montgomery Hall. Tell us the answers and we’ll give you some cash. No, seriously, if you are the first person to bring us the ten correct answers, you recieve a $5 bill. Monday. 8:15. Even if you can’t figure out the answers, come anyway and find out how to get credit for working on The Point News. Students set sail for life at St. Mary’s Orientation students enter in period of growth and optimism. For a guide to life at St. Mary’s, see inside. This is the SMC hotspot. You will almost never go to Walmart without seeing someone from St. Mary’s, especially during Orientation Week. Go there for batteries you forgot to pack, for the shoe rack you realize now you need, for notebooks and pens, or just to get out of your room. Well, this list was the best we could come up with. Good luck finding stuff to do. If every thing else backfires, you could always study.. .. Where the wild things are Navigating your way through St. Mary’s County ERIN CARMANY features editor Some of you, as you drove through miles of cornfields and gas stations from the 1950s, may feel a little nervous that you have left civilization behind and you will only see it on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now, that may be true, but cheer up! There are a few things to do in St. Mary’s County (of course, most of them involve hanging out-in Walmart, but we make that fun here). Here’s a guide to where you might find all the ‘cool kids’ this year. Books There are not too many bookstores in St. Mary’s County worth looking through. Not counting the SMC bookstore, there are two worth mentioning, and one is in Calvert County. The Lazy Moon in Solomons is a great used books store. It has two stories crammed with books from the floor to the ceiling, all packed into tiny, oddly-shaped rooms. This is a great place to come for classics at a low price (maybe saving you some money for Comp. 101). Bay Books is another great find. This is located in the Wildwood shopping center off Rt 235. It has a surprising number of books in many categories. With lots of comfy chairs, Bay Books invites you to spend the afternoon there. Open Mon.-Sat. from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sun. from 12 to 6. By the way, don’t be fooled by a store on Shangri-La Drive called Books. All you’ll find in this quaint country store is ‘bedtime’ reading material and accessories. Restaurants One place you’ll be sure to see an SMC student is in Perkins, a late-night diner. The food is typical diner food, but where else can you eat off-campus at 4 a.m. on a Saturday night? Located in the Wildwood shopping center, open 24 hours on the weekends, 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. the rest of the week. For Americana fare, try Linda’s Cafe, located off of Rt.235 about a mile north of the College. Another favorite option is the Bon Buffet, a Chinese and American buttct near Super Fresh on Shangri-La Drive (just before the intersection with Rt. 235). A slightly more upscale place to go out to cat is Applcbce’s, near Walmart. However, if your parents want to take you out to dinner, there are two nicer options. One of the CD Cafe in Solomons, which features a small but constantly changing menu (for dinner, entrees are around $10 to $15). Another good option, especially for seafood, is the Roost (entrees range from $ 10 to $20). The Roost is on Shangri-La Drive. Alcohol Now, this is a trick category. We can’t advise underage freshmen where or what to drink, of course! Besides, you probably know more by now than we do anyway. Entertainment No, this is not another trick category. We have some fun things to do in St. Mary’s County, like bowling and the movies. Okay, that doesn’t sound all that great. But beggars can ’ t be choosers* The movie theater is a Loews, and is a left turn off Rt. 235. One warning: usually there are no matinees. Movies there don’t usually start before 6 p.m. There is also a Blockbuster in the K-Mart shopping center, or you could rent movies for free at the SMC library. For bowling, we have Esperanza Lanes, located off Rt. 235 as well, a little before the junction with Rt. 4 on the right. Some nights they have bowling until midnight, which arc the best nights to go. All I can say is, if you don’t like bowling or movies, D.C. is ‘only’ an hour-and-a-half away. Shopping Obviously, there are no malls in St. Mary’s County (but keep your ears open for the upcoming underground mall). The closest mall is St. CharlesTowne Center in Waldorf, a mere hour-long drive down Rt. 5. Annapolis Mall is an hour-and-a-half away, down Rt. 4 to Rt. 2. There are quite a few outdoor shopping centers near the College. The Wildwood center includes a JCPenney’s and a Belk’s. For food, there are several options. Super Fresh is probably the closest, located on Shangri-La Drive right before the intersection with Rt. 235. McKay’s offers lots of fresh produce and also sells clothes, school supplies, toiletries and tools. Late-night munchies Papa John’s is currently the only pizza place that delivers to the College. They usually stop taking orders around 12:30 p.m. on weekdays and a little later on weekends. If you feel the need to take a small road trip for some snacks, Cook’s is right off Rt. 5. A bonus for stopping there is that the ATM machine outside the store doesn’t charge you if you don’t belong to that bank. (Of course, whatever your bank charges for using another bank’s ATM still applies.)
